Imagine God’s perspective of peering into the dense jungle of Ecuador’s Amazon basin. Beneath the canopy of a lush rainforest, He sees a people who need the Bible to discover hope in His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jorge, a pastor trained by Bible League International, sees them, too. Pastor Jorge works among the indigenous groups in the Napo River valley. This is the same area where Jim Elliot and other Christian missionaries lost their lives by the spear more than 50 years ago. “There was so much darkness before, but now there is light,” says Jorge.
Restoration for the river people
There are still many suicides. Alcoholism is rampant. Some communities mix elements of Christianity with witchcraft. Alonso assists Jorge, working with the Indian Federation. | On one of his river trips, Alonso met a man he’d never seen before. The man told him, “I’m the president of the community where your canoe is stopped. I invite you to come in.” This is a critical step—getting the approval and welcome of a tribe’s president. Today there is a thriving church there.
It’s no accident
What is God doing beneath the canopy of the rainforest? Jorge exclaims, “He keeps opening doors so we can plant more churches! Some people might say this happens by accident, but we simply can’t stop it.”
